Dancing With Duke: An Homage to Duke Ellington
Available Now! Order it from CDBaby.
Dancing With Duke, the sophomore effort from John Brown, an impressive follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut release Terms of Art, presents the versatile North Carolina bassist in a bright new light, leading a stellar trio featuring virtuoso pianist Cyrus Chestnut and New Orleans drum sensation Adonis Rose.
On his initial outing, Brown led a fiery hard bopping quintet through a tribute to the great Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers.
Here, the bass man steps further into the spotlight at the center of a swinging threesome as they dig deeply into the Ellington canon. A tightly knit unit, the leader’s long association with his colleagues dates back nearly two decades to when their paths crossed while he was a member of the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine, as Chestnut was making a name for himself with legendary vocalist Betty Carter, and Rose was cutting his chops as a member of young lion Nicholas Payton’s group. All together for the first time, they play with a cohesiveness that is a testimony to their deep respect for each other and the majesty of Ellington’s music.
